Spur Gears, Spiral Bevel Gears and Worms
There are two purposes of lubricating gears
a. Lubrication improves sliding between gears and reduces the friction coefficient.
b. Lubrication can put the rising temperature resulted from friction between surfaces of teeth under control and make the surface of tooth cool down.
There are three ways of gear lubrication
a. Grease lubrication
b. Immersion lubrication
c. Forced lubrication (circular oil supply) Lubricating methods depend on the type of gears used and selection is based on the circular speed and rotation speed of the gear. Generally speaking, grease is used for low speed, immersion for medium speed and forced lubricating for high speed.
Range of Circular Speed for Spur Gears & Spiral Bevel Gears | Way of Lubrication | Range of Circular Speed |
---|---|---|
Grease Lubrication | 0-6.5(m/s) | |
Immersion Lubrication | 4-15(m/s) | |
Forced Lubrication | 13 above | |
Rang of Worm Sliding Speed | Way of Lubrication | Range of Circular Speed |
Grease Lubrication | 0-4(m/s) | |
Immersion Lubrication | 3-10(m/s) | |
Forced Lubrication | 8(m/s) above |
